Entry # 1. Although Twitter has been around for many years, I have never used its service before this class. Navigating through the site is not rocket science thankfully, but I think the nuances of what the site has to offer have yet to be explored. So far, I have followed over 50 accounts and re/tweeted 14 times. There was a bit of a struggle initially as I was getting to know Twitter’s algorithm. Certain keywords I thought would be a home run with the search bar turned out to be a dead end. Eventually, once I made contacts with canines and aves specific organizations, I was able to see who is following them and vice versa, and thus began my following spree. When tweeting, I tried to focus on birds, as I decided they will be the focus of my research. I also tried to come up with some entertaining captions that would go along with the original post. Hopefully, the community would agree. Some of the people I retweeted are, World Bird Sanctuary CEO, Birder Brain, and Chirstopher Witt. These people/ organizations have been in the bird scene for far longer than me, and have made tweets that easily draw in people. Like me. While others have given me a… chuckle. Most have been a voice for animal cruelty. While scrolling through, I found many tweets raising awareness about near extinctions, and decreasing biodiversity; however, the most heart-wrenching was of a coyote stuck in wires, tied into a standing position, and with a sign reading, “Bad Coyote”. I knew most humans, me included, fear coyotes, but never thought we would treat them like this. It makes me all the more motivated to learn more about them to help along with bringing awareness. Overall, despite my experience only adding up to a handful of days, I have encountered many funny and insightful tweets. I also enjoyed seeing the community interact with my retweets. That was unexpected.
