“Here’s Why Beal Trimming of Chicks in Poultry Farms is a Senseless Act of Cruelty,” was published on August 22, 2016 by the author, Maneka Gandhi is an Indian politician, environmentalist, and an activist for animal rights. The community behind debeaking operates with the motto that their action is a necessary evil. They trim the beaks of chickens to prevent them from harming one another. Maneka Gandhi however fires back by raising a rhetorical question: why do the chickens harm each other in the first place? Should the community raise the chickens properly, in decent sized living quarters, same feeding, and some time with nature, the chickens would not be stressed and said behavior would be reduced. Furthermore, with money in mind, the process is often done to optimize efficiency and thus the beaks are often cut too deep. Like how we burn our tongue on hot soup, the burning hot knife they use to cut the beaks leave blisters behind. Even worse, burnt or severed tongues will eventually kill the chickens. That is when the procedure goes wrong, but even when done correctly, the results are no better. Drinking is immensely hard and painful or even impossible! Gandhi ends her writing by having readers know that this happens everywhere, and notes the only solution is to stop being a consumer. Maneka Gandhi is a respectable figure and brought up many compelling facts in this article. I believe these mentions will be beneficial to my project. While reading her writing, and descriptions of the things the chickens are put through, one parallel lingered in my mind, that is, surgeons from hell. Surgeons from hell are surgeons who operated on humans, and were caught purposely messing up the procedures. Naturally, the general public was beyond scared and appalled, I believe I could use this to generate empathy for the chickens.
